How to Prepare for a Relaxed Family Photo Session

Planning a family photo session? Whether it’s your first time or a yearly tradition, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous — especially when children are involved. At Giftly Art Print, I believe the best photos happen when everyone feels calm, comfortable, and themselves.

Here are some simple tips to help you prepare and get the most out of your session.

    1. Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable

Stick to neutral or soft colours that complement each other without matching too much. Avoid large logos or busy patterns. Comfortable clothing helps everyone move naturally and feel at ease — especially young children.

    2. Plan Around Your Family’s Energy

If your child is happiest in the morning, let’s book then. If afternoons are calmer, we can adjust. The goal is to photograph you at your best — not to fit into a strict schedule.

I offer flexible appointments to suit your family’s rhythm.

    3. Choose a Location That Feels Right

I offer sessions in my peaceful garden space in Maidstone — a lovely spot for natural light and relaxed interaction. Children love the open air, and parents appreciate the freedom it brings. We can also shoot indoors if preferred.

Wherever we photograph, the atmosphere will be calm, private, and free of pressure.

    4. Let Kids Be Themselves

You don’t need perfect smiles or poses. Some of the most beautiful moments come when children are just… being children. Whether it’s giggling, holding your hand, or running in the grass — I’ll capture the real emotions that make your family unique.

    5. Bring a Favourite Toy or Snack (Just in Case)

A small comfort item or snack can help a little one feel more secure. It’s always welcome — and sometimes even ends up in the photo (which can be adorable!).
